Atlantic Mine, Michigan
From my home kitchen to your table. Small-batch sourdough, buttery pastries, and custom celebration cakes β made slowly, the way they used to.
Our Story
Pennie's Home Bakery started the way the best things do: at a kitchen counter, with flour on the sleeves and a stubborn refusal to buy store-bought bread. What began as weekend experiments with wild yeast and long ferments became something the whole neighborhood noticed.
Today, everything is still made in the same home kitchen β just a bigger one, with a proper hearth oven. Every loaf is mixed by hand, every pastry is laminated from scratch, and every cake is decorated the old-fashioned way. No shortcuts. No preservatives. Just ingredients you can actually pronounce and a lot of patience.
From the Oven
Rotating selections based on season, mood, and whatever smells best in the kitchen that morning.
48-hour cold-fermented loaf with a shatteringly crisp crust and open, tangy crumb. Our signature β and the reason people drive from Marquette.
Every Day
Seven layers of French butter, folded by hand, baked until every flake falls away. Best eaten warm, standing right at the oven door.
Weekends
Birthdays, anniversaries, "we just got engaged" β tell me what you're celebrating and I'll make it look as good as it tastes.
By Order
Fruit tarts in summer, spice loaves in fall, warm brioche all winter. Whatever the season calls for β that's what shows up on the rack.
RotatingHow It Works
Whether it's a single loaf or a three-tier celebration cake, the process is simple.
Call, email, or drop a note through the form below. Tell me the occasion, the flavors you have in mind, and when you need it.
I'll confirm details, discuss options, and schedule your order. Sourdough needs time β custom cakes need a few days. Good things don't rush.
Your order is made in my home kitchen during the early hours β slow fermentation, careful shaping, and a hot hearth oven doing what it does best.
Collect from our Atlantic Mine kitchen or arrange delivery within the surrounding Upper Peninsula communities. Still warm, ideally.
Kind Words
The sourdough from Pennie's is the only bread I buy now. I've tried every bakery in the UP and nothing comes close to that crust.
She made a wedding cake for my daughter that looked like something out of a magazine. Everyone asked where we got it. We told them β and they drove out the next day.
I order a loaf every Sunday and it's the best part of my week. You can tell it's made with real patience β that flavor can't be rushed.
